Our Story
Uncle Joe’s Bayou Trading Post grew from a simple idea: take the old-fashioned Southern values of quality, practicality, family, and storytelling, and build a place where all of those things could come together.
It all started with Uncle Joe’s Skeeter Balm—an all-natural bug repellent inspired by swamp-tested wisdom, old-school remedies, and the kind of products people once made because they needed something dependable that actually worked. Handcrafted with rich shea butter and a carefully selected blend of essential oils, Skeeter Balm was created for fishermen, hunters, campers, porch sitters, backyard cooks, and anyone who would rather enjoy the outdoors without smelling like a chemical factory.
But Uncle Joe’s was never meant to stop with one product.
The inspiration behind the brand comes from the world of Tales from Uncle Joe, a Southern mystery series written by our owner and set along the Atchafalaya River in Louisiana. At the heart of those stories is Joe Conrad—a clever, stubborn, big-hearted amateur detective with a love for the outdoors, family, good stories, and doing things the old-fashioned way. In the books, Joe and his family run the Skeeter Balm business, carrying forward traditions that stretch back to homemade remedies once prepared for trappers, fishermen, and working folks along the bayou.
That spirit became the foundation for Uncle Joe’s Bayou Trading Post.
The Trading Post is our way of expanding beyond Skeeter Balm while staying true to everything that made Uncle Joe’s special in the first place. It is a growing collection of Southern goods, provisions, and stories inspired by porch mornings, fishing camps, cypress swamps, family kitchens, old general stores, and the people who believe that useful things should still be made with care.
Our expanding product line includes outdoor and personal-care goods such as Bayou Beard Balm, Working Hands Butter, Lip Butter, Boot Conditioner, and other small-batch products, along with upcoming additions such as Bayou Coffee and more Southern-inspired provisions.
You’ll also meet some familiar faces along the way. Aunt Joanna brings warmth, hospitality, and a little Southern charm to the Trading Post, while Sadie, Uncle Joe’s faithful tricolor companion, is never far from his side. Together, they represent the family-oriented, welcoming personality we want every Uncle Joe’s product to carry.
We aren’t interested in creating products just to fill a shelf. We want each item to feel like it belongs here—something useful, memorable, and rooted in the same world as Uncle Joe himself.
Whether you’re headed to the woods, putting a pot of coffee on before sunrise, conditioning an old pair of work boots, sitting beside the water, or settling in with a good story, we hope you find something at Uncle Joe’s Bayou Trading Post that feels a little familiar.
